Last weekend we packed our bags and headed to Edinburgh for a few days. Having just celebrated our anniversary together, and both being so busy in our jobs, it was high time we got away.
So if you’re heading to Edinburgh here are my top tips for places to go:
- Visit: Fudge Kitchen, Royal Mile
- Walk: Calton Hill
- Eat: The Rosehip, Rose Street
- Shop: Jenners, Prince Street
As soon as we arrived and put our bags down in the hotel we headed out for a walk. We went along the Royal Mile before heading to the opening night of the Christmas markets. Sadly the rain got the better of us and we found ourselves tucked up asleep rather early.
Saturday was a gorgeous day outside so we walked up Calton Hill to catch the views of Edinburgh first thing. We then had a scrummy lunch in the market (smoked pulled pork burger, anyone?) before we did a spot of shopping along Princes Street and George Street. We did a heap of Christmas shopping, with Jenner’s probably the best department store I’ve been to.
We were lucky to have a second day of gorgeous weather, and spent the morning with our friends at Fudge Kitchen. More on that soon, though. Having Googled the best tea room in Edinburgh we found Clarinda’s – towards the bottom of the Royal Mile. While they didn’t have clotted cream, they did have some beautiful china hanging on the walls.
The afternoon was spent walking up to Edinburgh castle and buying various cheese and pickles at the Christmas market! We finished off our trip with a meal at The Rosehip, on Rose Street. We’d wanted a gastro type, cosey place and having been recommended to us by a local, we weren’t disappointed. I couldn’t resist trying a bit of local food and opted for haggis, neeps and tatties – delicious!
Edinburgh is a nice little spot, and while it perhaps missed some of the magic I felt when we went to Bath this time last year, we still had an enjoyable few days. The people we met were friendly, the food was great and the weather was kind to us.
More than anything, it’s just nice to get away from the daily grind from time to time and spend some quality time together.
